Acutis Diagnostics, a specialized clinical and biosciences company, has been tackling some of Long Island’s most pressing healthcare issues with medical testing since becoming a New York State laboratory in September 2015.
One of the most important projects at the forefront of Acutis’s work is finding ways to guide cancer treatment decisions using advanced gene sequencing technologies.
“Acutis expects that gene sequencing will dramatically improve the way cancer medication is developed and that biomarker-specific treatment will be based on diagnostics, such as those being developed by Acutis,” says Acutis CEO Jibreel Sarij.
The company began as a clinical diagnostic laboratory in a 1,000-square-foot start-up space in Farmingdale. It has now grown to its current 40,000-square-foot facility in Hicksville employing more than 200 professionals.
In addition to cancer treatment research, Acutis has responded to the opioid epidemic with specialized clinical toxicology testing for patients in substance use treatment. In 2019, the company also introduced molecular testing with a focus on infectious disease, which proved timely when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Acutis has performed more than 2.5 million Covid tests since March 2020.
Acutis’s infectious disease focus continues to provide more advanced polymerase chain reaction-based (PCR) tests for conditions that are too often misdiagnosed with traditional testing, such as urinary tract infections.
“We stress the importance of moving together with continuous improvement in mind,” says Javon Barnwell, vice president of human resources. “Simply, we demand more of ourselves and each other to serve those who have entrusted us with their important care as best as we can.”
The company is also gearing up to form Acutis Biosciences, which will provide specialized contract services to assist biopharmaceutical companies in the research, development, and commercialization of new oncology therapeutics using genomics, including for identifying cancer mutations.
