SAGINAW, MI — A Saginaw health care organization will team with a university to provide free screenings for colorectal cancer this week.
Officials with the Saginaw-based Seton Cancer Institute at Ascension St. Mary’s hospital will provide take-home screening kits and educational sessions about the kits during sessions at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27.
The gatherings are scheduled at the Saginaw Valley State University facility now open in downtown Saginaw, 200 S. Washington.
Officials said space was limited for both sessions, but openings remain.
Interested attendees can register by calling the Seton Cancer Institute at (989) 907-8115.
Participants aged 45 and older with a primary care physician will receive a screening kit to take home, officials said. Interested attendees younger than 45 in certain circumstances could receive a kit, dependent upon the advisement of Seton Cancer Institute staff.
To receive results of the screenings, participants will mail their test kit in a postage-paid envelope to Ascension St. Mary’s hospital. Both the participant and their primary care physician will receive the results.
Attendees without a primary care physician can receive recommendations for such a professional from advisers at the Wednesday sessions.
Public health officials report colorectal cancer serves as the nation’s second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths.
The American Cancer Society estimated nearly 4,700 colorectal cancer cases will be reported in Michigan in 2022 and 1,700 people from the state will die from the cancer this year.
